Colorado Stillman-Kelley Winner & Collegiate Biennial Winner

COLORADO STILLMAN-KELLEY WINNER

CFMC’s Stillman-Kelley Auditions we held at Bob Baker Piano in Centennial Colorado on January 24th. Our three competitors-Alex Wu, Beau Salgado and Peter Mathys received the highest praise from our judges. Our Colorado winner, Peter Mathys will represent Colorado in the national Stillman-Kelley competition.
Peter Mathys, 16, is a sophomore at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado. He has been playing the piano since the age of 4, studies with Elena Mathys and also takes lessons with Larry Graham. Peter was selected to participate in the International Piano Festival in Portland, Oregon, where he participated in a master class with Paul Roberts (England). In September 2007 he participated in a master class with Olga Kern in Denver. For the 6 years – 2009 included – Peter was selected to perform at the Boulder Bach Festival and won the Boulder Bach Festival Young Artist Competition in 2006. Several times, most recently in 2008, Peter was a winner in the Yamaha Piano Competition. Peter has won the following competitions: the CSMTA Piano Competition in 2005, the Kawai Piano Competition in 2007, the Fort Collins Symphony Young Artist Concerto Competition in 2008, 3rd place at the Colorado Piano Festival in Greeley, playing Rachmaninov’s complete 2nd concerto and in 2006 Peter won 1st prize at the Steinway Piano Concerto Competition and performed the Saint-Saens 2nd piano concerto 3rd mvt with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver. Peter’s favorite composers are Rachmaninov, Chopin, and Beethoven; speaking of which, he made a documentary on Beethoven for National History Day. Born into a multilingual family, Peter is fluent in Swiss German and speaks, reads, and writes in Russian and French. He takes Latin and German at school as well.

COLLEGIATE BIENNIAL WINNER

Norman Anderson was designated the 2009 Colorado Biennial Student Collegiate winner at a live CFMC audition held at the Baker Piano Center in Highlands Ranch. Norman attends the University of Colorado at Boulder where he studies with Doris Lehnert. His program included the works of Bach, Haydn, Chopin, Brahms, and Barber.
Norman’s mother is Martha Thompson, a past CFMC state president. We are proud to submit a CD of his recorded program to the Western Region Biennial Contest.
As the Colorado Biennial Student Collegiate winner Norman was awarded a $250 cash prize.
